Overview

Dieter Rams, the industrial designer heralded for his “ten principles for good design," exemplified these notions through his furniture and products. But to bring these principles to life in person—as community—calls for a further, relatable dimension to what good design might mean, and how it can be celebrated today. For Vitsoe, the manufacturer and sole retailer of Rams’ furniture designs, the goal for their first New York shop was to use the space as a platform for dialogue around design and its meaning in everyday life.

Strategic Approach

For a global heritage company to tap into the local community, it was essential to explore culture, history, and collaboration when creating a programmatic strategy. Looking back at the SoHo neighborhood’s own history, the rich past of its loft gatherings became a source of inspiration: spaces for artistic endeavors and coming together. For Vitsoe’s New York store, the answer to building community was connecting to the history of place and integrating considered collaboration with partners around design, literature, and art—all while using brand's flexible furniture as backdrop for ever-evolving concepts.
